HMRC to refund child benefit penalties

HMRC are to refund thousands of pounds to taxpayers who received a penalty for unknowingly failing to notify the department that they were liable to the child benefit charge that was introduced from 7th January 2013. This is good news for those taxpayers who were not aware of the rules and received a penalty. There is no need to ask for the penalty to be refunded. HMRC will issue the relevant refunds due over the next 6 months.
